General Questions

  • Prototype is a first-of-its-kind, adults-only experimental museum in Columbus, Ohio. It’s designed to spark human connection, push the boundaries of immersive experience, and test new ways of engaging with art, technology, psychology, design, and culture. Visitors step into bold, multisensory spaces that are constantly evolving—because Prototype itself is always a work in progress.

  • Because that’s exactly what it is—a prototype. Every experience here is an experiment, created to be tested, refined, and improved over time. The name reflects the museum’s core belief in iteration, innovation, and collective creativity.

In film, gaming, theater, and museum design, ideas undergo rounds of collaboration, modeling, and feedback before they’re finalized. At Prototype, visitors are an integral part of the creative process. You don’t just experience the exhibit—you help shape what it becomes.

  • At Prototype, “experimental” means nothing is ever final. Every exhibit includes a brief explanation of the concept being tested and the questions being explored. Visitor feedback plays a central role—what you say and how you engage helps fuel updates and new ideas. Admission dollars directly support this creative R&D model.

  • Prototype doesn’t focus on one subject—it explores whatever we’re curious about. You may find immersive experiences that are tied to psychology, technology, nature, history, design, or culture. These topics are starting points, not boundaries.

  • Prototype is located inside Scioto Audubon Metro Park at 540 Maier Place in Columbus. The space is nearly 30,000 square feet and includes six immersive “stages,” a full bar, and ample room to explore. You’ll find us near a climbing gym, a bird sanctuary, and Nocterra’s newest brewpub.

  • Curious adults. Prototype is a go-to for date nights, friend groups, or anyone looking for something immersive, unexpected, and memorable. Due to mature themes, language, and the occasional presence of a bar, evening hours will be restricted to 21+ only.

  • Correct—for the most part. We’re designing this experience with adults in mind, including topics and content that wouldn’t fly in most traditional museums. Some daytime hours are available for ages 16+ or 13+ accompanied by an adult. But this is not a kids’ museum—and that’s the point. (Fun fact: the team behind Prototype also builds some of the top children’s museum exhibits in the country. We love kids—but this one’s for the grownups.)
